We all know the stigma around mental illness. While there is now a lot being done to reduce this, I want to see more scientific research being carried out into mental illness - I want to know what changes occur in the body that lead to mental ill-health. From this, hopefully we can develop novel treatments and aid prevention of mental illness. I also believe that, if we can underpin the biological causes of mental illnesses, then this will help to reduce the stigma, as we can have a blood test that identifies anxiety, or a scan that shows changes resulting in bipolar disorder. I believe that this is possible, but to do it, there needs to be greater funding for researchers.
This blog aims to explain what is and isn't know about mental illness. I am definitely not an expert! I have no background in mental illness and am doing this for my education as much as anyone's. But I do have a background in scientific research. And therefore I know the huge impact advances can have. That is why I am supporting MQ: Transforming Mental Health, a charity raising funds for mental health research.
